Stuart Linden Rhodes
Photographer and writer based in North Yorkshire, UK
Stuart Linden Rhodes, ‘Linden’, was the roving reporter for All Points North and Gay Times magazine during the early to mid-1990s. Covering mainly the north of England, his columns for those magazines were titled Out & About with Linden. The use of a pseudonym was due to concerns generated by the draconian Clause 28 legislation sanctioned by the Tory government of the era.
Stuart Linden Rhodes was also a lecturer at a local further education college and university, the pseudonym ‘Linden’ having been adopted to protect his career in teaching.
In addition to the Linden Archives, through the decades Stuart has photographed across Europe, India and the USA, capturing everyday urban life, concerts and festivals.
Stuart was interviewed for the BBC’s The One Show, and his imagery has featured as part of the BBC’s AIDS: The Unheard Tapes, while he is also a regular contributor to BBC radio and podcasts. Publications such as Photography: A Queer History, Mastermind Magazine, Attitude, 10 Men, Crotch, Gay45, The Guardian, and You Otter Know have utilised Stuart’s work; his photography has been exhibited at the Grundy Art Gallery, Queer Britain, The John Rylands, Moray Pride, Vane Gallery, the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, and the Museum of Youth Culture. In 2026, a selection of his works will be included as part of The 90s: Art & Fashion exhibition at Tate Britain.
Stuart’s first photobook publication, Out and About with Linden (A Queer Archive of the North), was created using the online platform Kickstarter and, after selling out, was republished by Manchester-based publisher Pariah Press. Stuart Linden Rhodes has since produced his second book, a coffee-table photobook of the queer 1990s titled simply Linden Archives. The foreword was written by actor Russell Tovey, and the book is again published by Pariah Press.
Stuart’s archive, including the popular Linden Archives, has been acquired by the John Rylands Research Institute & Library Special Collections in Manchester.
